FromSoftware, renowned for the masterpiece Elden Ring, has reassured fans through their latest announcement that they will continue crafting their signature single-player experiences. Despite venturing into multiplayer with titles like The Duskbloods and Elden Ring Nightreign, their dedication to single-player games remains unwavering. The Duskbloods, unveiled during the April 2 Nintendo Direct, is an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, blending online multiplayer PvPvE with the iconic Soulslike themes and aesthetics.

In a revealing post on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice blog on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed the company's future direction. He emphasized, "While The Duskbloods is an online multiplayer title at its core, this does not signal a shift towards multiplayer-focused development for us. We are committed to continuing our tradition of creating single-player focused games, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring."

The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki shared insights into the game’s thematic focus on blood. Players will embody "Bloodsworn," individuals granted superhuman abilities through special blood, akin to but distinct from traditional vampire lore. The narrative revolves around the quest for "The First Blood," emerging at the end of human society during "The Twilight of Humanity," an event spanning various times and places.

The game’s settings will range from Gothic and Victorian maps to scenes reminiscent of the early modern period, including a notable train sequence. Miyazaki explained, "Blood in The Duskbloods is symbolic, representing the game’s central themes of history, power, fate, and transcending human limitations."

Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer

The Duskbloods features a diverse roster of characters, each with unique designs and personalities. Players can choose from over a dozen characters, with options for customization. Miyazaki noted, "The character designs and their weapons offer unique elements, allowing players to find their favorites."

Starting at a central "hub," players select and customize their characters before entering online multiplayer sessions supporting up to 8 players. After matches, players return to the hub to collect rewards, primarily character customization items.

Gameplay typically involves survival until only one player remains, though some matches might require defeating a powerful boss or meeting other special conditions. Miyazaki stated, "Our goal is to offer experiences that help players learn and improve, with challenging PvE boss encounters that provide a sense of accomplishment."

Additionally, the game introduces "roles" with specific responsibilities and objectives. Examples include "Destined Rivals," where players must locate and defeat their rival, and "Destined Companion," requiring players to find a partner for unique rewards. Miyazaki elaborated, "Roles can be assigned via blood customization, enhancing the role-playing aspect and adding drama to player interactions."
