EA has provided an exciting first look at the upcoming Battlefield game, revealing insights into its development and player testing initiatives. As part of a video announcement, EA introduced Battlefield Labs, a new platform for playtesting, and shared a brief glimpse of pre-alpha gameplay footage.

EA also unveiled Battlefield Studios, a collective term encompassing the four studios dedicated to the new Battlefield project. These studios include DICE in Stockholm, Sweden, which is focusing on multiplayer development; Motive, responsible for single-player missions and multiplayer maps; Ripple Effect in the U.S., tasked with attracting new players to the franchise; and Criterion in the UK, now focusing on the single-player campaign after concluding work on Need For Speed.

The new Battlefield game marks a return to a traditional linear single-player campaign, a feature absent from 2021's multiplayer-only Battlefield 2042. EA emphasizes that the development teams are entering a "critical" phase and are eager to incorporate player feedback to prioritize, improve, and refine the game before its release. Participants in Battlefield Labs will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

EA expressed pride in the game's pre-alpha state and stressed the importance of playtesting to enhance the game's core elements such as combat and destruction. The testing will also cover weapons, vehicles, gadgets, maps, modes, and squad play, with a focus on classic modes like Conquest and Breakthrough, as well as exploring new ideas and refining the class system (Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon) to enhance strategic gameplay.

Initial invitations to Battlefield Labs will be limited to a few thousand participants, with servers initially located in Europe and North America, expanding to tens of thousands more and additional territories over time. This development comes after EA's decision to shut down Ridgeline Games, which was working on a standalone single-player Battlefield game.

In September, EA shared more details and the first concept art for the untitled Battlefield game, confirming a return to a modern setting following its ventures into World War I, World War II, and the near future. The concept art hinted at ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, along with natural disasters like wildfires.

Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, highlighted the importance of returning to the essence of what made Battlefield 3 and 4 successful, noting the nostalgia and peak "Battlefield-ness" of that era. This shift back to a modern setting is seen as a response to the mixed reception of Battlefield 2042, which introduced controversial features like Specialists and large 128-player maps. The next Battlefield will revert to 64-player maps and will not feature Specialists.

The stakes are high for the next Battlefield following the challenges faced by Battlefield 2042. EA CEO Andrew Wilson has described it as one of the "most ambitious projects" in the company's history, reflecting the significant investment and commitment to the franchise. Zampella emphasized the goal of regaining the trust of core Battlefield players while expanding the game's universe to offer more varied experiences within the franchise.

EA has not yet announced a release date, launch platforms, or a final title for the new Battlefield game.
