"Ghost of Yotei: Sucker Punch's Largest Game Yet"

Ghost of Yotei promises to be the most ambitious project from Sucker Punch yet, offering unprecedented freedom and expansive maps. Dive in to explore the new features and how the game honors Japanese culture.
Ghost of Yotei New Details Revealed
Freedom to Hunt the Yotei Six
In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new details about Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. The game aims to enhance the beloved gameplay and storytelling of its predecessor.
Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that Ghost of Yotei will feature the most freedom in gameplay and the largest maps ever designed by the studio. He stated, "Instead of guiding players through a linear path, they can discover the whereabouts of the Yotei Six at their own pace and choose how to exact their revenge."
Last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei and released a trailer titled "The Onryō’s List," which provided glimpses into the storyline and gameplay. The trailer introduced protagonist Atsu, who embarks on a quest to avenge her family against the Yotei Six.
More Melee Weapons
In addition to greater exploration freedom, players will enjoy more options in weapon selection. Following fan speculation from the latest trailer, Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the same interview that alongside the traditional samurai sword, Atsu can wield an array of weapons including the odachi, a chain sickle, dual swords, and a spear.
Fox stressed that while the sword remains the cornerstone of combat, players can learn to use other weapons from various masters encountered throughout the game's world. Unlike the previous game, which focused heavily on samurai honor, Atsu's non-samurai status allows for a more versatile fighting style. She can even pick up and use weapons dropped by defeated enemies, although this ability is limited to certain weapons.
Ezo as the Setting
Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), the game's environment balances a lawless frontier with the serene yet perilous beauty of nature, as described by Cornell.
Ghost of Yotei will also showcase the Ainu culture, indigenous to Japan's northern regions. The developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with Ainu culture experts to ensure an authentic representation. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's breathtaking landscapes, motivating the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide.
Following the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was praised for its accurate portrayal of Japanese culture and history, Sucker Punch aims to maintain this high standard with Ghost of Yotei, emphasizing the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."
Ghost of Yotei will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage in our upcoming articles!
