Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during its Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, games slated for release on competing consoles like the PlayStation 5 were often announced separately or omitted from initial Xbox showcases. However, recent showcases, such as the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, now prominently feature the PS5 logo alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass in game announcements. This was not the case in the June 2024 showcase, highlighting the evolution of Microsoft's approach.

This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo, who maintain a more console-centric approach to their showcases, often omitting mention of competing platforms even when games are multiplatform. The recent State of Play, for instance, featured multiplatform titles without acknowledging Xbox or other platforms.

Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this change in strategy in an interview with XboxEra, emphasizing transparency and the importance of reaching a wider audience. He explained that the previous omission of PS5 logos in the June 2024 showcase was due to logistical constraints in acquiring all necessary assets. Spencer's vision prioritizes showcasing games across all available platforms, recognizing that while not all platforms are equal in terms of capabilities, the focus should remain on game accessibility.

This new transparency suggests future Xbox showcases will likely include PS5 and, potentially, Nintendo Switch 2 logos alongside Xbox for multiplatform titles. This could mean future showcases featuring games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty will prominently display the PS5 logo alongside the Xbox branding. However, it's unlikely that Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
