在12月4日发布的任天堂官网“开发者访谈”文章中，《马里奥和路易吉：兄弟情谊》的开发商Acquire表示，在开发过程中，这对著名兄弟曾一度拥有更硬朗、更粗犷的形象，但任天堂认为这与既有风格差异太大，会丧失马里奥和路易吉的辨识度。
接受采访的开发人员包括任天堂娱乐企划开发部的奥谷明和福岛智树，以及Acquire的大桥晴幸和古田仁美。为了打造“能够展现系列独特魅力的3D画面”，并使其有别于其他马里奥系列游戏，Acquire进行了大量的尝试，探索独特的风格——于是，硬汉风的马里奥和路易吉诞生了。
“在我们寻找新的马里奥和路易吉风格的过程中，我们一度尝试塑造更硬朗、更粗犷的马里奥……”设计师古田笑着分享道。随后，他们收到了任天堂的反馈，指出美术风格应该让粉丝一眼就能认出是马里奥和路易吉，于是召开了会议重新评估方向。为了指导Acquire，任天堂提供了一份文件，描述了该系列中马里奥和路易吉的定义。“虽然我们热情地推出了这个粗犷版本的马里奥，但当我从玩家的角度考虑时，我开始担心它是否真的代表了玩家想要扮演的马里奥，”她补充道。在任天堂明确的指导下，他们最终找到了答案。
“我们能够将焦点缩小到如何结合两点：例如，采用实线勾勒和大胆黑色眼睛的插图的吸引力，以及像素动画描绘这两个角色滑稽地向各个方向移动的魅力。我认为那时我们才开始发展这款游戏独有的美术风格。”
任天堂的奥谷补充说：“虽然我们希望Acquire拥有自己独特的风格，但我们也希望他们保留马里奥的定义。我认为这是一个我们正在尝试如何让这两者共存的时期。”
充满挑战的开发过程
Acquire是一家以较少色彩和更严肃的游戏而闻名的工作室，例如JRPG《八方旅人》和动作冒险系列《侍道》。古田甚至承认，如果团队放任自流，他们会下意识地转向更偏向黑暗RPG的风格。对Acquire来说，创作一款基于全球知名IP的游戏也是一项挑战，因为他们很少为其他公司的角色创作游戏。
最终，一切都有了最好的结果。“虽然我们仍在适应马里奥和路易吉系列的氛围，但我们决定采用这个方向，这样我们就不会忘记这是一个充满乐趣和混乱冒险的舞台。这不仅适用于游戏世界，我们还从任天堂独特的让事物更容易被看到和理解的设计理念中学到了很多东西。由于我们获得的见解，这个世界变得更加明亮，更容易游玩。”
