WoW Mocks FF14's Housing in New Plan
Blizzard Entertainment has exciting news for World of Warcraft fans: player housing is on its way with the upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight. In a recent developer blog, Blizzard provided an early glimpse into how the game will introduce this much-anticipated feature, even taking a light-hearted swipe at Final Fantasy XIV's housing system in the process.
One of the key pillars Blizzard outlined for WoW's housing is "A Home for Everyone." The team emphasized inclusivity, stating, "As a part of our focus on wide adoption, we wanted to ensure that Housing is available to everyone. If you want a house, you can have a house." They've made it clear that there will be no steep requirements, high purchase costs, lotteries, or burdensome upkeep. Importantly, even if your subscription lapses, your house remains secure, avoiding the risk of repossession.
Player housing in MMOs offers players their own personal spaces within the game world, which they can customize and decorate. These homes can be visited by other players, fostering a sense of community and creativity. In Final Fantasy XIV, player housing has led to innovative uses such as theater productions, nightclubs, cafes, and museums. However, it's also faced criticism for its limited plots, high costs, lottery system, and the risk of demolition if left unattended.
World of Warcraft aims to address these concerns head-on. Housing in WoW will be shared across the Warband system, allowing characters to share homes and rewards across factions. For example, while a Human character cannot purchase a house in a Horde zone, a Troll character in the same Warband can, and the Human can then use that house. This feature enhances flexibility and inclusivity.
The housing system will be organized into two zones, divided into "Neighborhoods" with approximately 50 plots each. These neighborhoods will be instanced and offer both Public and Private options. Public neighborhoods are managed by game servers and dynamically created as needed, ensuring there's no hard limit on the number of available plots.
Blizzard is committed to making housing a lasting and evolving feature in World of Warcraft. Alongside "boundless self-expression" and being "deeply social," the team envisions housing as a "long-lasting journey" with its own roadmap, promising updates in future patches and expansions. This approach demonstrates Blizzard's awareness of the challenges faced by other games and their dedication to creating a robust and engaging housing system.
While many details are still forthcoming, the community eagerly awaits further announcements as the summer unveiling of World of Warcraft: Midnight approaches.
