Bloodborne PSX Demake Faces Copyright Claim: Modder Offers Remake Theory

Mar 13,25(1 years ago)

The Bloodborne PSX demake, a recent fan project, has become the latest victim of copyright claims, following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Lance McDonald, the well-known creator of the 60fps mod, announced a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, requesting removal of all online links to his patch—four years after its release. Now, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart (formerly Bloodborne Kart) and the Bloodborne PSX demake, reports a YouTube video of her demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement. McDonald confirmed MarkScan is a company employed by Sony, the same entity responsible for the DMCA against his 60fps patch. He expressed bewilderment at these actions, stating, "And now they’ve DMCAed an old video about the Bloodborne PSX demake project. That’s pretty wild. What the hell are they doing??"

Bloodborne's continued absence from the next-gen scene is a major point of contention among fans. Despite its critical and commercial success on PS4, Sony hasn't updated the game. Fans clamor for an official 60fps patch, remaster, or even a sequel. Recently, advancements in PS4 emulation, highlighted by Digital Foundry's video showcasing ShadPS4's capabilities, allowed for a near-remaster experience on PC at 60fps. This breakthrough may have prompted Sony's aggressive response. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment, but has yet to receive a reply.

McDonald offered a speculative theory: that Sony's DMCA actions might be a preemptive move to clear the way for an official 60fps remake. He suggested that removing fan-made 60fps and remake content from search results would prevent conflicts when an official release is announced. This, he posited, might be necessary for trademarking related terms.

Despite these actions, Sony has yet to officially announce any plans for Bloodborne. Last month, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his perspective in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep affection for Bloodborne and his current workload prevent him from either updating the game himself or allowing others to do so. Yoshida stated this was merely a theory, and that the PlayStation team respects Miyazaki's wishes.

Bloodborne remains inactive almost a decade after its initial release. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about the game, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on more modern hardware would be beneficial.
