Marathon Release Date Unveiled at Gameplay Showcase

Bungie, the renowned developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially announced the release date for their much-anticipated first-person extraction shooter, Marathon, during a captivating gameplay reveal showcase. Dive into this article to uncover more about the game's innovative features and the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.
Marathon Set to Launch on September 23, 2025
On April 13, Bungie unveiled a detailed gameplay showcase for Marathon, marking a significant evolution from its predecessors. This new iteration shifts focus to multiplayer dynamics, where six teams of three players will compete fiercely against each other and AI adversaries to secure valuable loot and successfully extract their finds.
This marks a bold departure from the original Marathon trilogy, which included Marathon (1994), Marathon 2: Durandal (1995), and Marathon Infinity (1996). These games were primarily story-driven, single-player experiences.
In a detailed post on the PlayStation blog dated April 12, Bungie's developers shed light on the new direction for Marathon. Despite the shift to a multiplayer-centric format, Marathon's Narrative Leader, Jonathan Goff, emphasized maintaining the immersive storytelling that has been a staple of Bungie's games. He noted, "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection." Goff further elaborated, "Our goal with Marathon is not merely to tell a story, but to build worlds in which stories can and will unfold."
Crafting Marathon as a "Story Engine"
During the reveal stream, it became evident that Marathon places a significant emphasis on in-game economics, with every item in a player's inventory having a sell price and clear indications of what can be extracted from a map. However, Bungie clarified that accumulating wealth is not the sole focus of the game.
The developers aim for Marathon to function as a "story engine," generating memorable battles and lasting experiences, even from failed missions or empty-handed exits. Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler shared with PC Gamer, "What we're trying to do is say, 'how do you go on adventures and then feel that survival challenge, that survival story that you're making?' Some of the best survival stories and moments I've had in gaming are actually failures or weird things that have happened." Ziegler's vision underscores that success in Marathon is not solely about survival but also about crafting compelling narratives from each run.
Collaboration with Fans and Creators
Throughout the development of Marathon, Bungie has actively engaged with fans and content creators, involving them from the game's early stages. This community involvement has been crucial, with players testing early prototypes and offering valuable feedback.
One critical piece of feedback concerned the unpredictability and perceived unfairness of the game's maps, where players could camp spawn points indefinitely, or desired loot could already be taken. Responding to this, Ziegler explained, "After hearing this feedback, we moved to the design we have today, where each match is a fresh start for everyone. This consistent starting point means you and your teammates can better strategize before each run, and then you can race enemy teams to fight for the loot you’re looking for."
Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest Details
Bungie is set to launch a Closed Alpha Playtest for Marathon, running from April 23 to May 4. This playtest is exclusively for residents of the U.S. and Canada.
Participants will have the opportunity to try out four distinct Runners: Blackbird, reminiscent of Destiny 2's Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, featuring a tactical shield; and Glitch, noted for its exceptional mobility. The alpha will include three maps: Perimeter, a woodland setting for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more expansive map accommodating six crews (18 players).
To participate, players need to join the official Marathon Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, and use the "/alpha" command. However, as this is a closed alpha, an invitation is not guaranteed.
No additional playtests have been announced for regions outside the U.S. and Canada at this time. Marathon is slated for release on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our related article below!
