Trails and Ys Localizations Promised to Come Faster

NIS America is committed to bringing Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys series to Western audiences faster. This article explores their efforts to accelerate localization.
NIS America Speeds Up Localization of Trails and Ys Games
Faster Falcom Games for Western Fans

Exciting news for JRPG fans! During the recent Ys X: Nordics digital showcase, NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, announced a renewed focus on faster Western releases for Falcom's popular Trails and Ys franchises.
While Costa couldn't detail specific internal changes, he confirmed dedicated efforts to expedite localization. Ys X: Nordics (out now) and Trails Through Daybreak II (early 2025) exemplify this commitment. The latter's early 2025 release, despite a September 2022 Japanese launch, represents a significant improvement on previous timelines.

Historically, Western fans faced lengthy delays. Trails in the Sky, initially released in Japan in 2004, didn't reach a global audience until 2011. Similarly, Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure took twelve years to arrive in the West.
A 2011 blog post by former XSEED Games Localization Manager, Jessica Chavez, explained the challenges of translating the massive text volumes in Trails games with limited staff. This highlighted the significant translation workload as a major bottleneck.
While a two-to-three-year localization process remains the norm, NIS America emphasizes quality. Costa clarified that speed won't compromise quality; they aim for a balance, continuously improving their approach.

The time-consuming nature of localization, particularly for text-heavy games, is understandable. The year-long delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues serves as a cautionary tale. However, Costa's statements suggest NIS America is successfully navigating the balance between speed and accuracy.
Trails Through Daybreak's recent release indicates positive progress in delivering high-quality localizations more quickly. Its positive reception from fans and newcomers bodes well for future NIS America releases.
