Warner Bros. Shuts Down Wonder Woman Game, Closes Three Studios
Warner Bros. has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated Wonder Woman game and the closure of three of its studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego. This decision was first reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier on Bluesky and later confirmed to Kotaku by Warner Bros. in an official statement.
In their statement, Warner Bros. explained that these closures were part of a strategic shift to focus on key franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The company emphasized that this move was not a reflection on the talent within these studios but rather a necessary step to realign their development efforts. The Wonder Woman game, developed by Monolith Productions, was halted as it no longer fit within the company's strategic priorities despite the team's efforts to deliver a high-quality experience.
The cancellation of the Wonder Woman game follows earlier reports this year that the project was facing difficulties after undergoing a reboot and a change in directors in early 2024. This news comes amidst broader challenges for Warner Bros.' gaming division, including layoffs at Rocksteady Studios, the underwhelming reception to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the shutdown of MultiVersus.
Adding to the turmoil, Warner Bros. Games has undergone significant restructuring. Long-time head David Haddad recently left the company, and there have been rumors that the gaming division might be sold off. This latest move is particularly damaging to Warner Bros.' efforts to expand its DC universe in gaming, especially following comments by James Gunn and Peter Safran that it would be "a couple of years" before the first DCU video game is released.
The closure of these studios marks a significant loss for the gaming industry. Monolith Productions, established in 1994 and acquired by Warner Bros. in 2004, is renowned for its Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor series, which introduced the innovative Nemesis system, patented by Warner Bros. in 2021. Player First Games, founded in 2019, developed MultiVersus, which, despite critical acclaim and a successful launch, did not meet Warner Bros.' expectations. WB San Diego, also founded in 2019, focused on mobile and free-to-play games.
These closures are part of a broader trend in the games industry, with over 10,000 developers laid off in 2023 and more than 14,000 in 2024. The exact impact in 2025 remains unclear as fewer companies are reporting specific numbers related to layoffs and studio closures.
