Console War Ends: Is It Final?

The age-old debate of PlayStation versus Xbox has been a staple in the gaming community for years. You might have found yourself diving into this discussion on platforms like Reddit, TikTok, or even in passionate exchanges with friends. While some gamers swear by the superiority of PC gaming and others remain loyal to Nintendo, the last two decades have largely been defined by the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft. But in today's rapidly evolving gaming landscape, is the so-called 'console war' still relevant? The video game industry has transformed significantly over the past year and the past two decades, with gamers' habits, preferences, and options expanding due to the rise of handheld gaming and the tech-savvy younger generations. The battlefield has changed dramatically, but has a clear winner emerged? The answer might surprise you.
The video game industry has skyrocketed in financial stature in recent years. In 2019, it boasted a global revenue of $285 billion, which surged to $475 billion by last year. To put that into perspective, in 2023, video games out-earned the combined global revenue of the movie and music industries, which totaled $308 billion and $28.6 billion, respectively. The industry's growth shows no signs of slowing down, with projections estimating nearly $700 billion by 2029. From its humble beginnings with games like Pong, the industry has come a long way.
Given this lucrative trajectory, it's no wonder that Hollywood stars such as Mads Mikkelsen, Keanu Reeves, Jon Bernthal, and Willem Dafoe have been drawn to video games in the past five years. Their participation underscores a significant shift in how video games are perceived. Even giants like Disney are making strategic moves into the gaming space, as evidenced by their recent $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games during Bob Iger's second term. While a rising tide should lift all boats, Microsoft's Xbox seems to be facing some challenges.
The Xbox Series X and S were designed to surpass the Xbox One in every aspect. However, their advancements haven't captured the market as hoped; the Xbox One still outsells the Series X/S by nearly double. Coupled with insights from Mat Piscatella of Circana, who suggests that the current console generation may have reached its sales peak, the outlook for Xbox is concerning. Sales figures for 2024 from Statista reveal that the Xbox Series X/S sold less than 2.5 million units for the entire year, while the PlayStation 5 achieved the same figure in the first quarter alone. Rumors of Xbox closing its physical game distribution department and potentially pulling out of console sales in the EMEA region further compound the issue. If Xbox was ever engaged in a 'console war', these signs might suggest a strategic retreat.
However, Xbox isn't merely retreating; it has effectively surrendered. During the lengthy Activision-Blizzard acquisition process, Microsoft's findings of fact revealed that the company doesn't believe its Xbox division lost the console war—it never stood a chance to begin with. Faced with struggling sales for its latest console and its parent company's acknowledgment of this reality, Xbox is pivoting away from the console business.
Xbox Game Pass has become a central focus for Microsoft. Leaked documents show the company's willingness to invest heavily in AAA titles for the service, such as paying $12-15 million per month for Grand Theft Auto 5 and $300 million for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This move underscores Microsoft's shift towards cloud gaming. The 'This Is An Xbox' campaign further illustrates this strategy, redefining Xbox not just as a console but as an accessible service complemented by hardware.
Rumors of an Xbox handheld in development, supported by leaked documents from the Activision-Blizzard deal, suggest Microsoft's vision of a 'hybrid cloud gaming platform'. Microsoft's shift has been transparent, from plans to launch a mobile game store to compete with Apple and Google, to Xbox chief Phil Spencer acknowledging the impact of mobile gaming on the company's future. The new mission for Xbox is clear: be the gaming brand you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.
Why is Microsoft making this pivot? Despite the traditional dominance of console gaming, the landscape has shifted significantly. In 2024, out of the estimated 3.3 billion video gamers worldwide, 1.93 billion play on mobile devices. Mobile gaming has transcended casual audiences, becoming the dominant force across all generations, particularly among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. In 2024, the video game industry's total market value reached $184.3 billion, with mobile games accounting for half of that at $92.5 billion—a 2.8% increase from the previous year. In contrast, console gaming's share stands at $50.3 billion, or 27%, which has actually decreased by 4% since 2023. It's clear why Microsoft is eager to transform your phone into an Xbox.
This trend isn't new. By 2013, the Asian mobile gaming market had already outpaced the West, with South Korea and China leading by 759% and 280%, respectively. Surprisingly, in 2013, Puzzle & Dragon and Candy Crush Saga outgrossed GTA 5 by $1.5 and $1.4 billion. Looking at the 2010s, five of the highest-grossing games were mobile titles: Crossfire, Monster Strike, Honor of Kings, Puzzle & Dragon, and Clash of Clans. These games may not be the first that come to mind, but their impact on the gaming industry is undeniable.
Mobile gaming isn't the only factor drawing attention away from consoles. PC gaming has also seen significant growth, with a year-on-year increase of 59 million players since 2014, rising from 1.31 billion to 1.86 billion in 2024. The surge was particularly notable in 2020, with an additional 200 million players joining during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gamers have become more tech-savvy, learning from online communities about building powerful PCs and optimizing their hardware. Despite this, the global market share for PC gaming in 2024 is valued at $41.5 billion, and the gap between console and PC gaming has widened from $2.3 billion in 2016 to $9 billion in 2024. This indicates a decline rather than growth in the PC gaming market, which is not encouraging for Xbox, given its strong presence on Windows PCs.
Turning our attention to PlayStation, Sony's position in the so-called console war is much stronger. Sony's latest quarterly earnings report shows that 65 million PS5s have been sold, far outpacing the combined 29.7 million sales of the Xbox Series X/S. For every Xbox Series X/S sold, five PS5s are purchased. Sony's Game and Network Services have seen a 12.3% profit increase, driven by strong sales of first-party titles like Astro Bot, which sold 1.5 million copies in under two months, and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, which has surpassed 13 million lifetime sales. Projections suggest that by 2029, Sony will have sold 106.9 million PS5s. In contrast, Microsoft's leaked documents project sales of 56-59 million Xbox Series X/S units by 2027. To regain competitive ground, Microsoft would need to close the 5:1 gap with PlayStation, significantly increase unit sales, and enhance the profitability of its exclusives—challenges that current projections do not favor.
However, looking solely at the PS5 reveals a more nuanced picture. Despite being in the second half of its lifecycle, 50% of PlayStation users are still using PS4s. This is partly due to the lack of compelling PS5-exclusive titles. In 2024, of the top 20 best-selling games in the U.S., only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at #19 was a true PS5 exclusive, while Helldivers 2, at #3, was also available on PC. Excluding remasters, there are only about 15 genuine PS5-exclusive games, which may not justify the console's $500 price tag for many.
The $700 PS5 Pro also received a lukewarm reception, with tech journalists suggesting the upgrade might have come too early in the console's lifecycle, especially since the games highlighted in its campaign were slightly upscaled versions of older titles. A poll by IGN showed that readers felt the PS5 Pro offered little value for the price. Thus, the PS5 isn't yet a must-buy console, though this could change with the much-anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year, which is poised to showcase the PS5's full potential.
So, has the console war ended? For Microsoft, it appears there was never a real chance to challenge Sony for dominance. For Sony, the PS5 has been successful but hasn't yet established itself as a significant leap forward. The true victor in this war seems to be those who opted out of the traditional console battle. With mobile gaming giants like Tencent rumored to be acquiring companies like Ubisoft and having already purchased Sumo Group, the focus is shifting. Mobile gaming is increasingly crucial for the sustainability and profitability of gaming companies. Take-Two Interactive reports that 10% of the world's population plays its subsidiary Zynga's games monthly, suggesting that even casual mobile games are funding major console titles like Grand Theft Auto 6. The next five years of gaming will be defined less by hardware prowess and more by the expansion of cloud gaming services. The console war may be over, but the mobile gaming war—and its myriad spin-off battles—has just begun.
