Starfield Developer Says Players Are Sick of Long Games

A former Starfield developer reveals player fatigue with excessively long AAA games. The saturation of the market with lengthy titles is fueling a potential shift towards shorter gaming experiences. However, despite this trend, long games like Starfield remain a significant part of the industry.

Will Shen, a former Bethesda developer who worked on Starfield, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76, voiced concerns about the length of modern games. He observed a growing player weariness stemming from the significant time investment required.

Starfield, Bethesda's first new IP in 25 years, exemplifies the trend of lengthy open-world RPGs. While the game's success demonstrates the appeal of expansive content, Shen highlights a contrasting preference for more concise gameplay among a segment of gamers. This aligns with a common criticism leveled at many AAA titles.

In an interview with Kiwi Talkz (via Gamespot), Shen stated that a substantial portion of players are tiring of games boasting dozens of hours of content. He characterized adding another lengthy title to an already crowded market as a significant challenge. He cited the success of games like Skyrim as contributing to the prevalence of "evergreen" titles, a trend comparable to Dark Souls' influence on third-person combat difficulty. Crucially, he noted that many players fail to complete games exceeding ten hours, impacting engagement with the narrative and overall product.

The Rise of Shorter Games: A Reaction to AAA Saturation

Shen linked the abundance of lengthy AAA games to the resurgence of shorter games. He pointed to the popularity of Mouthwashing, emphasizing its short playtime as a key factor in its success. He argued that extending Mouthwashing's runtime with side quests would have negatively impacted its reception.

Despite the growing popularity of shorter experiences, longer games are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Starfield's 2024 DLC, Shattered Space, and a rumored 2025 expansion demonstrate Bethesda's continued commitment to expansive content for its flagship title.
