The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom marks a groundbreaking moment, being the first Zelda game helmed by a female director. This article delves into the insights shared by Tomomi Sano and the game's innovative development journey.
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – A Developer Interview Unveils Key Details
Tomomi Sano: The Zelda Series' First Female Director
Renowned for its epic storytelling and intricate puzzle design, the Legend of Zelda series reaches a new milestone with Echoes of Wisdom. Nintendo's recent "Ask the Developer" interview highlighted two pivotal aspects: Princess Zelda's debut as the playable protagonist and the series' first female director, Tomomi Sano.
Sano, in her interview, shared her journey, stating that her previous role primarily involved supporting the director. Her contributions to Grezzo's remakes – including Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Link's Awakening, and Twilight Princess HD – along with her experience on the Mario & Luigi series, laid a strong foundation for her directorship. She describes her role as managing production, suggesting improvements, and ensuring Grezzo's gameplay aligned with the Zelda series' established standards.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma noted Sano's consistent involvement in Grezzo's Zelda remake projects, highlighting her expertise and value to the team.
Image from Nintendo's Ask the Developer Vol. 13 Sano's extensive career, spanning over two decades, began in 1998 as a Stage Texture editor for Tekken 3. Her Nintendo credits include Kururin Squash! and Mario Party 6, and she's also contributed to various Zelda and Mario & Luigi titles, as well as several Mario sports games.
Echoes of Wisdom's Genesis: From Dungeon Maker to Innovative Adventure
Echoes of Wisdom's origins trace back to the 2019 Link's Awakening remake. Aonuma tasked Grezzo, the co-developers of Link's Awakening, with creating a blueprint for the franchise's future. While initially considering another remake, Grezzo proposed a bold alternative: a Zelda dungeon maker.
Aonuma's simple question – "What kind of game would you like to make next?" – sparked numerous proposals. The winning concept, while similar to the final game, underwent significant evolution. Early prototypes explored a "copy-and-paste" mechanic and a dual top-down/side-view perspective.
Grezzo's Satoshi Terada explained their parallel development paths, including one where Link could copy and paste objects to create dungeons – initially termed an "edit dungeon" feature.
Over a year was dedicated to this dungeon creation mechanic before Aonuma intervened, significantly altering the game's direction. While appreciating their initial ideas, he envisioned greater potential if copied items served as tools for progression rather than pure dungeon construction.
Sano illustrated this shift, citing the example of a Thwomp enemy, demonstrating how its function could be adapted across different perspectives.
Initial concerns about potential exploits led to restrictions on item usage, but these were later removed, embracing a principle of "mischief" – encouraging creative and unconventional gameplay. This led to features like unpredictable spike rollers, deemed crucial to the game's experience. A document outlining the "mischief" guidelines was even created, emphasizing freedom and ingenuity.
This emphasis on freedom echoes the spirit of previous Zelda titles. Aonuma compared it to the Myahm Agana Shrine in Breath of the Wild, showcasing how unconventional solutions, even seemingly "cheating," can enhance the fun.
Launching on September 26th for Nintendo Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom presents an alternate timeline where Zelda embarks on a rescue mission amidst rifts tearing through Hyrule. Further details on the gameplay and story can be found in related articles.
