"Metal Gear: Revolutionizing Stealth Game Narratives"
Hideo Kojima Reflects on Metal Gear During the Konami Title's 37th Anniversary
On July 13, the gaming world celebrated the 37th anniversary of Metal Gear, the iconic action-adventure stealth video game initially released on the MSX2 computer in Japan in 1987. Hideo Kojima, the visionary creator behind the Metal Gear franchise, took to social media to share his reflections on the game's groundbreaking elements. In a series of tweets, Kojima delved into the development and lasting impact of Metal Gear, emphasizing one key innovation that set it apart.
Metal Gear Was Ahead of Its Time Using the Radio Transceiver
Kojima highlighted that while Metal Gear is renowned for its stealth gameplay, the in-game radio transceiver concept stands out as a revolutionary storytelling tool. This feature allowed protagonist Solid Snake to communicate with other characters, providing players with critical in-game information such as the identity of bosses, character betrayals, and team member deaths. Kojima emphasized that the radio transceiver not only served as a narrative device but also helped motivate players and clarify gameplay rules.
"Metal Gear was packed with things that were ahead of its time, but the biggest invention was including the concept of a radio transceiver in the storytelling," Kojima tweeted. He further explained that the interactive nature of the radio transceiver enabled the game's narrative to evolve in real-time with the player's actions, enhancing immersion and engagement.
Kojima elaborated on how the radio transceiver bridged the gap between the player's actions and the unfolding drama, stating, "The game moves along with the player, so when the drama happens when the player isn't present (without the player's knowledge), the player's feelings get detached. But with the transceiver, the player's current situation can be depicted while the other characters' story or situation can be foreshadowed in parallel." He proudly noted that this "gimmick" continues to influence modern shooter games, many of which still employ similar radio communication mechanics.
Hideo Kojima Won't Stop Creating, Ahead of OD's and Death Stranding 2's Releases
Reflecting on his career, the 60-year-old Kojima openly discussed the challenges of aging and its impact on his work. He acknowledged the physical difficulties that come with age but stressed the value of accumulating knowledge, experience, and wisdom over time. These qualities, he believes, enhance one's ability to anticipate the future of society and projects. Kojima tweeted about how the "accuracy of creation" in game development, spanning planning, experimentation, development, production, and release, improves with time.
Kojima's reputation as a master storyteller extends beyond the gaming industry, often likened to a cinema auteur. When not collaborating with celebrities like Timothée Chalamet or Hunter Schafer, Kojima is deeply engaged with his production company, Kojima Productions. He is currently working with actor Jordan Peele on the project OD, and his studio is also preparing for the next installment of Death Stranding, which will be adapted into a live-action movie by film studio A24.
Looking ahead, Kojima remains optimistic about the future of game development, citing the continuous evolution of technology in the industry. "By borrowing the help of technology, 'creation' has become easier and more convenient. As long as I do not lose my passion for 'creation,' I believe I can keep going," he concluded, reaffirming his dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in gaming.
